Losing a Parent: A Personal Guide to Coping With That Special Grief That Comes With Losing a Parent
Published in Paperback by Perseus Book Group (November, 1993)
Authors: Fiona Marshall and Marshal
Average review score:

The one book that I recommend
After my mother suddenly passed away, I was having a really tough time coping--nothing anyone would do or say could change the profound sense of insecurity I felt. Short, to-the-point, and not overly "touchy-feely", it simply explains why you are feeling the way you do. I had wished that I had read the book BEFORE my mother had died because the first section of the book focuses on dealing with terminally ill parents and steps you can take to prepare yourself. I recommended it to all my friends whose parents are still living.

A very thoughtful guide. Practical, deep, but not too deep.
A very good guide for a specific type of loss. The author really covers the spectrum of feelings and issues associated with losing a parent. Not only helpful for a child of a deceased parent but also for a parent who remains critically ill. In fact, for the child who has already lost a parent, going through the process of a parent's death is very helpful as well. Not the only book a grieving (adult) child should have but a necessary one.

Marshall Loeb's Lifetime Financial Strategies
Published in Hardcover by Little Brown & Company (15 January, 1996)
Author: Marshall Loeb
Average review score:

Excellent Book for Personal Finances
An excellent book that covers all the financial bases for personal finances. Great for anyone, from college to retired, single or married. This single book cuts through all the confusion and gives clear, to the point advice on selecting stocks, building IRAs, taxes, insurance, health care, etc.

My only concern is that the book was written in 1996 and some of the information could be dated. Still, it is good solid fundemental advice. Anyone following the guidelines and sticks to them will achieve the financial independence they are looking for.

Sophisticated,and very well written
Absolute route to money power.

I like the way this book is designed to go straight to your immediate interests.

Shows you how to eliminate fifty percent of your business and personal worries.

This is definitely a prescription for curing emotional upsets as in financial worries.!

This book is dedicated to all of you guys out there who think they do not need it.!

The Marshall Plan
Published in Hardcover by Berg Pub Ltd (March, 1993)
Authors: Allen W. Dulles and Michael Wala
Average review score:

Essential reading for understanding applied social analysis.
It is rare to get an insider's view of an important policy decision written with this much thoroughness and clarity. The Marshall plan is one of the most important things America has ever done in world affairs, and the prototype and foundation of the transformation of international relations that America is presently leading. This is its best account. The authors of the Marshal plan were democratic visionaries solidly grounded in pragmatic realities. Allan Dulles speaks for them. (Do not confuse Allan with his brother).

Marshall, the Courthouse Mouse: A Tail of the U.S. Supreme Court
Published in Hardcover by Vacation Spot Pub (May, 1998)
Authors: Peter W. Barnes and Cheryl Shaw Barnes
Average review score:

Terrific!
Peter and Cheryl Barnes have opened the doors to the Supreme Court and taken some of the mystery out of the judicial process. Told in rhyme and chock full of information, vocabulary and other fun facts, Chief Justice Marshall J. Mouse and his fellow mice justices show youngsters, step by step, how a law is challenged and makes it way through the court...from petition and oral arguments, to the work by court clerks and conferences by the justices, to handing down the final opinion. Cheryl Barnes marvelous, detailed illustrations include the actual architecture and decor of several rooms inside the U.S. Supreme Court. In addition, there are historical notes and other factual information about the Court, famous cases and several justices at the end of the book, to augment lessons and discussions. Marshall, the Courthouse Mouse is a fascinating introduction to the Supreme Court, that will whet the appetite of kids 5 and up and have them asking for more.

Marshall, the Courthouse Mouse: A Tail of the U.S. Supreme C
Marshall, the Courthouse Mouse is an excellent story to teach kids about the judicial system. As a 3rd grade teacher this book really makes it a lot easier and fun for me to teach civics. The use of rhyme throughout the story gets even my most reluctant students involved in the learning process!

Super Book--And Practical!
Practical Insights into the Mechanics of Conflict January 6, 2003
I read this book nearly 10 years ago and found it very helpful. As a pastor of over 23 years and a survivor of a few humdinger conflicts, it was comforting to know that conflicts have patterns. It also helped me control my own responses.

I wouldn't wish church conflicts on a dog, but they seem to come (to most of us in the ministry, not dogs!) no matter what precautions we take. But they can often be contained early, and this book can help. It will also help you accept that conflict is common and to be expected, therefore leading us to the conclusion that one should be as prepared as possible. The chapters are all pretty good, but those written by Speed Leas excel.

The time to read this book is before (or early on)conflict begins. Every pastor needs to be prepared for what is inevitable. Lay leaders (board members, etc.) can also benefit from this book. Also helpful would be Terry Muck's book, "When to Take A Risk."

Practical Insights into Church Management
The authors approach Church Management from their various perspectives, but all seem to have a grip on managing a church, everywhere from facilities to staff to offering security to planning.

This is a fine book with some great specific suggestions.

Murder on Appeal
Published in Hardcover by Xlibris Corporation (20 March, 2001)
Author: Holmes Marshall
Average review score:

Highly realistic Murder mystery
A great read. I love mysteries that are puzzles and this is one the best. Author is familiar with the criminal justice system; the novel rings with authenticity. The plot is well paced and suspenseful. The protagonist is an original, a jurist as the detective. Justice Scott is richly nuanced, neither eccentric nor stuffy, one of a kind. Overall, the mystery has a fresh and original quality.

Legal Groupie Finds Satisfaction
I'm a legal groupie. Holmes Marshall led me through the Vatican-like halls of the Second District Court of Appeals with the confident step of an insider. That's what I loved in his new mystery novel -- peeking under those medieval robes of Justice. Justice Cameron Scott is Cinderella-in-Reverse: a handsome, principled, Appeals Court Judge who shines during daytime hours on the bench but falls to shambles once he leaves the polished mahogany courtroom. Scott has a failed marriage, an under-achieving son and sexual adventures that draw him into a catacomb of greed and murder. Marshall's sophisticated take on the delicate balance between corrupt palace politics and a democratic judicial system makes MURDER ON APPEAL a smart, intriguing thriller... and you do get to peek!

Night Drop: The American Airborne Invasion on Normandy

You want detail? YOU GOT DETAIL!
Think you know alot about the awesome 82nd and 101st during D-day?..well if you havn't read SLAM's book then think again...This book flattened me with the amount of minute detail it covered about individuals while maintaining the overall picture of what the divisions were up to. You will find out about individuals who took certain bridges and crossroads that are never mentioned in bigger histories. Want to know what the men were thinking during the battles? Well SLAM asked them during the war and records it hear for all to hear. You will absolutely love this book. It is sad, exciting, heart wrenching and will make you proud to be from the same country as these awesome men! The only problem is finding the book...do a rare book search on the internet and should be able to find an old copy (found mine for 4 bucks). Good luck and enjoy!

Excellent AIRBORNE
This is an excellent book on the Airborne drop into Normandy on D-Day. A must read for any historian of airborne. The book is detrailed down to individual and squad actions while at the same time giving you the overall picture.

An Heirloom Book for many Generations...
Both my 9 year old daughter AND I loved this book. This is a wonderful story, appropriate for all ages. It is a story of healing, understanding, and of course CROCHET! If you are a crocheter, give it to the person who taught you how to crochet - she can be your "Irene" as in the book. Highly Recommended - it is quick and easy reading, too.

An inspiring, healing book.
Any one who is -- or is related to -- a Holocaust survivor, any crocheter, anyone who has lost family treasures: all will regain perspective, hope and insight from this inspiring, healing story. Faye, any chance Mia would share the pattern?

The Old Somerset Railroad: A Lifeline for Northern Mainers
Published in Paperback by Down East Books (01 June, 2000)
Author: Walter Marshall Macdougall
Average review score:

The Past Is Brought To Life
I read this book after my father, who lived in Somerset during his childhood, gave me the book as a gift and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My dad rode the Old Somerset Railroad regularly as a boy and Mr. Macdougall's anecdotes and stories, documenting the history of the railroad in northern Maine, put into perspective for me what it must have been like for my father to grow up in those times. Thank you Mr. Macdougall - I found your work both fascinating and informative.

Superbly written, magnificently presented railroad history.
Begun in 1872, the Somerset Railroad linked the Maine coast with Canadian businesses. For fifty-six years it carried people and goods from the north woods around Moosehead Lake to Southern Maine and New England. A legend in the annals of northeastern railroading, Walter Macdoughall's illuminative history, The Old Somerset Railroad: A Lifeline For Northern Mainers, employs and easy-reading anecdotal style as he surveys the railroad's construction, rolling stock, employees, and the ways in which the lives of the people living along the tracks became interwoven with this remarkable railroad. The Old Somerset Railroad is a superbly written and presented contribution to any personal, academic, or community library collection railroading histories.

Outward Signs: The Language of Christian Symbolism
Published in Paperback by Walker & Co (February, 1992)
Authors: Canon Edward N. West, Edward N. West, and Marshall Arisman
Average review score:

excellent resource
I would really like to obtain my own copy of this book. It is an excellent resource for artists and Christians who want to understand the visual signs of their faith. Persons designing banners would also benefit from this book.

Every library should have their own copy
This book is a great teaching tool. It clearly illustrates, and defines the meanings of, and the history to the different symbols used in the Christian church. It is one of the best reference books on this subject found. I would love to find my very own copy.
